How do you bulk edit prices in Shopify?

Export your products, set the change here, and import the file it gives you with “Overwrite products with matching handles” ticked.

  1. In Shopify, go to Products > Export, choose All products and CSV file for Excel, Numbers, or another spreadsheet program, then Export products. Shopify emails you the file.
  2. Drop the file above. Pick a vendor, type or tag if only some products are going up.
  3. Set the percent or dollar amount and the rounding, then read the before and after table.
  4. Keep the original export as your backup. Go to Products > Import > Add file, tick Overwrite products with matching handles, then Upload and continue and Import products.

Shopify says an import can’t be canceled once it starts and keeps no import history. Our field guide on bulk editing Shopify prices safely covers test batches and checking the result.

How do you calculate a price increase percentage?

Multiply the old price by one plus the increase: new price = old price × (1 + increase %). The change you actually made is (new price − old price) ÷ old price.

To end every price in .99, round up to the next whole dollar and take off one cent. In Excel or Google Sheets, with the old price in B2 and the increase in C2 (8% for 8 percent):

  • Plain: =ROUND(B2*(1+C2),2)
  • Ending in .99, rounded up: =CEILING.MATH(B2*(1+C2)+0.01)-0.01

Example: a 24.00 candle raised 8% is 25.92, which rounds up to 25.99. That is a real change of 8.3%. Cheap items move further: 4.00 becomes 4.32, then 4.99, a 24.8% jump. The tool flags any row that rounding moves more than 5 points off your target.

To work out the increase from a new supplier cost or tariff, use the tariff price increase calculator. To tell customers, use the price increase letter.

What happens to compare-at prices when you raise prices?

They stay where they are unless you change them too. Shopify shows an item as on sale only when the compare-at price is higher than the price.

Raise prices without touching compare-at prices and some sale badges disappear, or a “was” price ends up below the new price. The tool can change compare-at prices by the same rule, leave them, or clear them. It can also clear any compare-at price that ends up at or below the new price. Shopify says to clear the field entirely, so the tool writes a blank cell.

Example: a candle at 24.00 with a compare-at price of 28.00, raised 8% to .99, becomes 25.99 with a compare-at price of 30.99.

Which columns go in the Shopify import file?

Only the columns Shopify needs to match each variant, plus the prices: URL handle, Title, the Option name and value columns, SKU, Price and, when it changes, Compare-at price.

  • Shopify keeps the current value of any column left out of the file.
  • A blank cell in a column that is in the file is overwritten as blank.
  • Leaving out Option1 name and Option1 value makes Shopify create a new default variant and delete the existing ones.
  • Shopify still accepts older column names. The tool reads old names like Handle and Variant Price too.
  • Every variant of a changed product goes in the file, at its new or current price.

Shopify’s limit is 15 MB per product CSV. The import file is usually far smaller than the export.

How do you do a bulk price increase in WooCommerce?

Export from Products > All Products > Export, drop the file above, then import the result with Update existing products ticked.

WooCommerce matches each row on ID or SKU. The tool changes Regular price, and Sale price if you choose. Variations are their own rows with a Parent, so each variation gets its own new price. Variable parent rows have no price and are left out.

Questions

Is my product file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and does the math on your computer. Close the tab and it is gone.

Can I lower prices with it?

Yes. Enter a negative percent or dollar amount. Rounding up keeps each price at or above the lowered amount.

Why are some unchanged variants in the import file?

When one variant of a product changes, every variant goes in the file with its option columns. Each one matches its existing variant and keeps its current price.

Does it work with a price list that is not from Shopify?

Yes. Paste or drop any sheet with a price column. You get the same columns back with the new prices, only for the rows that changed.
