What is the Amazon title character limit in 2026?

Since July 27, 2026, titles in all categories except media must be 75 characters or fewer, spaces included. Before that, most categories allowed 200.

Amazon says titles still over 75 will be updated to its own recommended title, gradually. Brand owners get 14 days to review and approve those changes before they go live.

Example: a 97-character skillet title is 22 characters over. If you don’t shorten it, Amazon will rewrite it for you.

How do you count the characters in an Amazon title?

Every letter, number, space and punctuation mark counts as one character. The checker counts characters, not bytes, so an accented letter counts once.

Characters over = title length − 75

In Excel or Google Sheets, with the title in A2:

  • Length: =LEN(A2)
  • Characters over: =MAX(0,LEN(A2)-75)
  • What fits: =LEFT(A2,75)

Example: “Brindlewood Electric Coffee Grinder, Burr Grinder for Espresso, French Press and Pour Over, 18 Settings” is 103 characters, so 28 fall past the cut.

What is the Amazon Item Highlights character limit?

Item Highlights holds up to 125 characters. Amazon’s announcement of the 75-character rule points to it for materials and recommended uses that help shoppers compare.

The download gives each long title a version shortened at the last whole word, and the leftover words as a starting point for Item Highlights. Read each one: a mechanical cut can split a phrase.

Example: end the grinder title after “for Espresso” (62 characters) and move “French Press and Pour Over, 18 Settings” (39 characters) to Item Highlights.

Which words and characters does Amazon not allow in titles?

Amazon’s title rules from January 21, 2025 still apply alongside the new limit:

  • The same word may not appear more than twice. Prepositions, articles and conjunctions are exceptions.
  • Amazon staff have said singular and plural count as the same word.
  • These characters are not allowed unless they are part of the brand name: ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦
  • An Amazon staff reply on the forums also named ~ < > ; as not allowed. The checker flags those separately.

Example: “Spatula Set, Heat Resistant Spatulas, Best Spatula” uses spatula three times, so the checker flags it.

How do I check every listing at once?

  1. In Seller Central, go to Inventory > Inventory Reports and request the All Listings Report.
  2. Download the .txt file and drop it above as it is. It is tab-delimited, and the title is the item-name column.
  3. Type your brand name and any words a shopper must see, like the product type.
  4. Download the SKUs to fix, shorten them in the sheet, then upload the changes.

A category listing report or flat file works too, saved as .txt or CSV. If the title column is wrong, pick it in step 2. For lost or damaged units in the same account, the FBA reimbursement finder reads the Inventory Ledger.

Questions

Does the 75-character limit apply to every marketplace?

The announcement used here is from Amazon.com Seller Central. Check the title requirements page for each marketplace you sell in, and set the limit field to match.

Does the brand name count toward the 75 characters?

Yes. The 75 counts every character in the title, spaces included, so a brand at the start uses part of it. The checker flags titles where the brand falls past the cut.

What about media listings?

Media is outside the 75-character rule. Set the limit field to the number your category style guide gives and check those listings in a separate run.

Is my listings file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file and runs every check on your computer. Close the tab and it is gone.
