How do you split a CSV into multiple files?

Pick a limit, and the tool cuts the rows into numbered files with the header row copied to the top of each one.

Files = data rows ÷ rows per file, rounded up

Example: 2,350 customers going into QuickBooks Online at 999 rows per file gives 2,350 ÷ 999 = 2.35, so 3 files of 999, 999 and 352 rows.

  • Rows are copied exactly as they are in your file.
  • “Keep rows together” stops one invoice or one product from landing in two files.
  • “Only keep rows where” pulls out one state, one customer or one status before splitting.
  • “One file per value in a column” gives each state, customer or status its own file.
  • Title rows above the header and a Total row at the bottom, as in a QuickBooks report export, are left out.

To see what changed between two files after an import, use the CSV compare tool.

What do you do when a CSV is too large for Excel?

Split it into files under 1,048,576 rows, the most one Excel worksheet holds, or load it through Power Query into a PivotTable.

Excel opens only the rows that fit and warns that saving the workbook loses the rest. Microsoft says to never save over the original.

Rows Excel drops = data rows + 1 header row − 1,048,576

Example: a sales export with 1,300,000 data rows loses 1,300,000 + 1 − 1,048,576 = 251,425 rows. The Excel worksheets preset gives 2 files that each open in full.

For one tab in Google Sheets, check the cell limit with the Google Sheets cell limit checker.

How do you split a CSV for a QuickBooks Online import?

Keep each file to 1,000 rows, and for invoices to 100 invoices, with every line of an invoice in the same file.

  • Customers and vendors: Intuit limits each import to 2 MB or 1,000 rows.
  • Invoices: each file holds up to 1,000 rows and 100 invoices. Each line is its own row with the invoice number repeated.
  • Sales tax: Intuit says invoices can’t be imported this way if sales tax is set up in your account.

The presets stop at 999 rows plus the header, so no file goes over 1,000 rows.

Invoice files = the larger of (invoices ÷ 100) and (lines ÷ 999), rounded up

Example: 260 invoices on 780 lines gives 2.6 and 0.78, so at least 3 files of 100, 100 and 60 invoices.

How big can a Shopify product CSV be?

Shopify accepts a product CSV up to 15 MB. If an upload fails or times out, Shopify says to split the CSV into smaller files.

Variant and extra image rows carry the product’s Handle, so the Shopify preset keeps every row with the same Handle in one file.

Files = file size ÷ 15 MB, rounded up

Example: a 41 MB catalog export gives 41 ÷ 15 = 2.7, so at least 3 files.

Questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file in 4 MB pieces and builds the parts on your computer. Close the tab and it is gone.

How large a file can it split?

There is no upload limit, because nothing is uploaded. Very large files take longer to read, and the limit is your computer’s memory.

Can it make one file per customer or state?

Yes. Choose “One file per value in a column” and pick the column. Each file is named after its value.

Can it split an Excel file?

Save the sheet as CSV UTF-8 first (File > Save As), then drop that file in. You can also paste rows straight from Excel or Google Sheets.

Does splitting change my data?

No. Each row is copied byte for byte from your file. Rows move only when “Keep rows together” gathers a group that was spread through the file.
