Is QuickBooks Desktop 2024 ending in May or September 2027?
Neither, on Intuit’s current pages. Articles that still give either date are out of date.
- May 2027 came from the old pattern. Each Desktop year used to retire after about three years; version 23.0 “has been discontinued as of May 31, 2026.”
- Intuit dropped that pattern. “We’re moving away from the historical 3-year software lifecycle,” and “Intuit commits to keep version 24.0 up to date for years to come.”
- September 30, 2027 isn’t on Intuit’s pages. Neither the 2024 “What’s new” page nor the release process page mentions it.
- What 24.0 keeps getting: support and product updates, security patches, tax-law compliance and new features.
Which versions does this cover?
| Version | Status on Intuit’s pages |
|---|---|
| Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise Solutions 2024 (24.0) | No sunset date |
| Mac Plus 2024 | Not named in the no-sunset statement |
| Any 2023 version (23.0) | “Discontinued as of May 31, 2026” |
| Pro, Premier or Mac 2021 and older | Intuit encourages a move to QuickBooks Online |
- 2024 is the last yearly version. Plus 2024 and Enterprise 24.0 “were our final annual platform releases.” New features now arrive as updates.
- Premier Plus isn’t sold to new customers. Intuit stopped new US sales of Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enhanced Payroll after September 30, 2024. Existing subscribers “are not impacted,” and it is not “a discontinuation (sunset).” Enterprise is still sold.
How do you keep Desktop 2024 supported?
1. Check what you’re on. Press F2 or Ctrl+1 to open Product Information and read the version and release. If it says 2023, go to step 4.
2. Take the updates. Intuit says to “accept the periodic, in-product updates when you see them.” To automate them, go to Help, then Update QuickBooks Desktop, open the Options tab and select Yes. The newest release on the 2024 “What’s new” page is R22, dated November 5, 2026, with the tax year 2026 changes to 1099 and 1096 forms.
3. Keep the subscription current. Plus and Enterprise subscribers “receive version 2024 at no extra cost as part of your annual plan.”
4. Upgrade any 2023 file now. After May 31, 2026, the 2023 versions lost live support, security updates, bank feeds, payment processing and automatic payroll tax calculations. Save a backup in its own folder first, because “you can’t use the upgraded file in the older version.” Our guide to QuickBooks Desktop 2023 being discontinued covers the upgrade.
Should a wholesaler stay on Desktop or move?
With no deadline, the question is which of your daily tools survive a move. From Intuit’s transfer guide (updated November 5, 2026):
- Sales orders move. “Open and closed sales orders move, along with the purchase orders and invoices you created from them.” Intuit’s sales orders page lists Online Plus, Advanced and Intuit Enterprise Suite.
- Inventory needs Plus or Advanced. “Inventory tracking is only included in QuickBooks Online Plus and QuickBooks Online Advanced.”
- Price levels don’t move. They’re marked “Not in QuickBooks Online.”
- Average cost becomes FIFO. Online “uses the first in, first out (FIFO) method from that date forward.”
- Units of measure and manufacturer’s part numbers have to be set up again.
- Assemblies flatten. “Assemblies become single inventory items on sales transactions.”
- Open purchase orders need relinking. They “won’t show items as received until you link them to the bill.”
- Memorized reports are rebuilt as custom reports.
Our guide on moving from QuickBooks Enterprise to Online as a distributor covers what to do about each one.
| Option | Good for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on Desktop 2024 (Premier Plus or Enterprise) | Price levels, units and reports that run the business today | Taking every update; Premier Plus can’t be bought new |
| Move up to Enterprise 24.0 | Outgrowing Premier Plus; Intuit calls Enterprise “our flagship desktop product” | An annual subscription, like Premier Plus |
| Move to QuickBooks Online Plus or Advanced | Sales orders and stock in the browser | Price levels, units and assemblies; FIFO from the move date |
| Move to Intuit Enterprise Suite | Several company files | Files must be on 2024 Release 16 or higher, or 2023 Release 17 or higher |
| Bring in an outside team (Cleanups & bulk changes) | Big files with open orders and reports that must match | Read access and time with whoever runs the books |
How do you plan a move before you need one?
1. Pick a cutover date. A month end or quarter end gives you clean balances to compare.
2. Sign up for Online close to that date. You have “90 days from when you sign up for QuickBooks Online to import your data,” or 180 days if your accountant does it.
3. Export what won’t move. Save to Excel your price levels by customer, units of measure, open purchase orders, inventory valuation and the memorized reports you use.
4. Check the size. Press F2 or Ctrl+1 and read Total Targets. Intuit’s condense guide says a file with more than 5,000,000 targets must be condensed first. Our Desktop to Online readiness checker shows where yours stands.
5. Clean the file. Run Verify Data. “If QuickBooks Desktop finds a problem, run Rebuild Data, then verify again.”
6. Update, then export. Update Desktop to the latest release. In Premier Plus, go to Company, then Move to QuickBooks Online, then Export Your Company File to QuickBooks Online. If the Online company already has data, replacing it is final: “You can’t undo this.”
7. Check it worked before you stop using Desktop.
- The balance sheet and profit and loss match for the same dates, apart from FIFO adjustments.
- Quantity on hand matches item by item for your top sellers.
- Open sales orders match by count and total.
- Each open purchase order is linked to its bill or shows the right quantity to receive.
- A test invoice for your biggest customer picks up the right price.
